A Darn Good Look At Words of a Poet

Written on January 1, 2008 – 1:28 am

Words of a PoetWords of a Poet shows a side of Matthew Henrickson I haven’t seen before. Some of you may know of him from his wildly popular Blog About Your Blog, but his blog about poetry gives us a little insight into his ability to move us with his words.

Since April of 2007, Matthew has been sharing his craft with readers. But he’s also opened his doors to other word-worthy poets. So if you have something you’d like to present to his readers, he’s open to submissions.

Being a father myself, his poem entitled “To my unborn child” connected with me. Here’s an excerpt:

I always want you to know
Daddy will love you
No matter how hard
He has to try for you.

I don’t know how ready the world is to have you
But apparently your ready to be here
I hope you are here to save me
And help me along the way
Someone to tell me they love me
And mean it everyday.

One thing I think would be an interesting addition is to see some commentary on what provided the motivation for his works. For example, The Razor’s Jaw tells a story of what I interpret to be as a helpless soul who has fallen into an uncontrollable situation, finding only pain and suffering as companions. Did this spring from imagination or was it symbolic of a personal experience? If the latter, perhaps it’s too personal to share, which would be completely understandable.

But even without the commentary, the poems you’ll experience here are at times touching while others conjure up strong and deep emotions. Nicely done, Matthew!

I really appreciate this review :)

My poetry has taken up as much as I would of liked but if anything it’s somewhere for me to share my work even if I only get several visits a day.

I would definitely ‘commentate’ the poem if you are interested in that. During highschool it was pretty tough with me. I had tons of emotion and put myself out there a lot. When you do that you get hurt. I’ll make sure to write about it all ;)

    @Matthew
    You’re very welcome, buddy! :)
I know what you mean about putting yourself out there. I’m not sure I could do that, so kudos to you for what you’re doing over there.
